Intern Perspectives: Nicole Peña

I have an ingrained passion for live events. As a child in Mexico I used to live inside my families dance hall, surrounded by the energy and constant excitement of parties and shows. Over the years my interests shifted to film and theater. While studying film and digital media at UC Santa Cruz, I felt unfulfilled. Upon graduating I looked for more engaging projects that tapped into my life long passion for live events.

With research, I found The UC Theatre Concert Careers Pathways Program and was excited to hear that I had been accepted into the program. I had hoped to improve my stage-hand and lighting skills but found that The UC Theatre had far more to offer than I had initially anticipated. Throughout the internship, I have had the opportunity to work with Patricia Gums, Director of Special Events. Not only have I sharpened my skills in technical theater, but I have also learned skills in project management, outreach and communication – skills that have proven to be invaluable outside of The UC Theatre. I’m excited to learn more! Thanks to The UC Theatre, I am finally able to see a future of someday owning my own venue, a dream otherwise forgotten.

Update: Nicole was mentioned in San Francisco | The Official Guide as a local insider. What a great feeling to see our education program in action!
