Kristina Kamphuis joined The UC Theatre’s Youth Advisory Board in February 2016 hoping to learn new skills and explore career opportunities in something she was passionate about — music. Through her participation, she not only helped shape the design of the Concert Career Pathways program and joined our floor staff, but was also introduced to the world of event coordination.
The theatre’s Director of Special Events, Patricia Gums, saw that Kristina had great potential in this field and took her under her wing. Kristina assisted Patricia’s first special event at the theatre — the Annual Gala for the Berkeley Community Fund. Through this experience and exposure, she “saw first-hand the importance and impact of community involvement.”
Kristina continued to assist Patricia with the SF Travels Hospitality event, where she took center stage in informing guests about the education program. Kristina reflected that “this experience gave [her] the confidence to step onto The UC Theatre’s stage to make the special concert announcements at sold out shows.” She also had the opportunity to network with industry professionals while working the Grammy Advocacy Day at the theatre. Kristina felt that “it was very interesting and informative to hear different perspectives on music business-related issues, … it was a great privilege and honor.”
