Intern Perspectives: Phil Katague

After years of playing in bands and organizing shows in backyards and small clubs around the East Bay, all I knew was that I wanted to pursue a career organizing events at a live music venue.  The live music industry is pretty hard to get into, as there is no clear path and few degree programs in that field. One night by chance, I stumbled across an article about the brand new UC Theatre’s Concert Career Pathways program and decided to apply. Several months later I walked into the first day of my dream internship unsure of what to expect.

Overall, the Concert Career Pathways program has been an incredibly fun experience for me. As an intern focusing on General Management and Administration of the venue I’ve gotten a hands-on look at how a venue the size of the UC Theatre is run, from shadowing the General Manager during shows, to helping out at in the office during the day. Learning normally dry (but important) tasks like filling out tax documents or compiling spreadsheets is fun and engaging to me because I’m passionate about working at the theatre. Even more exciting is the fact that the venue has been open for less than a year and I’ve gotten to help our amazing team build a brand around this beautiful space. To top it all off, I’ve gotten to see a lot of cool shows, met a ton of cool people and made a ton of cool friends.
